Les Amazones d'Afrique

Southbank Centre, Queen Elizabeth Hall Foyer, SE1 8XX , [Venue Details]

The pan-African feminist supergroup embraces international voices to bring richly melodic and far-ranging music, and a message from Africa for the world.

Les Amazones d’Afrique is a creative blend of African heritage and new generation talent.

Formed with the goal of campaigning for gender equality and eradicating ancestral violence, their music is a powerful vessel for their message.

It blends pan-African styles and collaborative harmonies with gritty, contemporary pop, and the Congotronics-style production of legendary producer Doctor L (aka Liam Farrell).

The collective was formed in Bamako, Mali, in 2014 by three renowned Malian music stars and social change activists, Mamani Keïta, Oumou Sangaré and Mariam Doumbia, and it has since expanded to involve many female artists from across Africa and the diaspora.

Their albums have featured guest contributions from the likes of Angélique Kidjo and Nigerian singer-songwriter Nneka, and caught the attention of President Obama, who included one of their songs in his 20 favourite tracks of 2017.

Feel music in new ways at this event with Beat Blocks, a powerful multi-sensory interactive flooring system. Beat Blocks translates sound into vibrations, adding to the sensory immersion, and providing another way to experience events for those sensory impairments.
